Tackling Food Waste at SUAD

Managing food waste is a key part of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi’s commitment to sustainability. As the campus grows, so does the responsibility to reduce waste and create sustainable food systems.

Rising demand, stronger response

With a notable increase in student numbers in 2025, the volume of food prepared and consumed on campus has grown significantly. Despite this, SUAD’s food waste management efforts have scaled up effectively:

  • In 2023, food waste composting efforts were limited and inconsistent, collecting a total of 6.6 tonnes
  • In 2024, following the implementation of a structured collection system and awareness initiatives, the university diverted over 9.2 tonnes of food waste from landfills
  • 2025 has already seen over 3.9 tonnes of food waste collected in just the first quarter, reflecting increased activity and improved collection efficiency across all dining areas.

Composting for a greener campus

The collected food waste is diverted to composting facilities, supporting the university’s landscaping efforts and closing the loop in the waste cycle. The compost produced is used to enrich multifunctional green spaces across campus, which serve both ecological purposes and social purposes.

Beyond reducing SUAD’s carbon footprint, composting also acts as a powerful educational tool, raising awareness among students and staff about circularity, environmental stewardship, and well-being on campus.

The mesures underpinning these improvements

  • Expansion of food waste collection bins to cafeterias and student residences
  • Greater student participation through sustainability club initiatives and awareness campaigns on sustainable development
  • Supplier accountability in meal preparation and food waste management
  • Regular monitoring and monthly reports produced by the Facilities Management and Sustainability Team

A continued commitment

As the University welcomes more students each year, SUAD remains determined to ensure that growth does not come at the expense of the environment.

By maintaining a strong focus on awareness, infrastructure development, and student engagement, SUAD is on track to achieve its goal: zero food waste sent to landfill by 2026.
