Recycling at SUAD: A Growing Circular Culture
At Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, recycling is more than a process—it is a practice embedded in our sustainability vision. Through targeted infrastructure, campus-wide education, and active student participation, the university is reducing waste and giving materials a second life.
SUAD's recycling efforts in 2024 resulted in:
- Paper: 26.11 kg recycled
- Plastic: 66.35 pieces diverted from landfills
- Aluminium Cans: 68.1 cans recycled
- 2025 Momentum (January–March)
With a growing student population in 2025, the university saw strong recycling numbers in just the first quarter:
- Paper: 12.14 kg (46% of the entire 2024 total)
- Plastic: 44.93 pieces (68% of 2024 total)
- Aluminium Cans: 54.93 cans (81% of 2024 total)
This early progress demonstrates the effectiveness of improved waste sorting infrastructure, student engagement, and vendor alignment.
How We Make It Work
- Clearly labelled recycling bins placed across high-traffic areas
- Separation-at-source training for students, faculty, and vendors
- Monthly tracking to monitor material flows and optimise logistics
- Recycling drives and awareness campaigns led by student volunteers and the Facilities Team
Our Goal
Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi aims to become a zero waste-to-landfill campus by 2027, with recycling and composting forming the backbone of this mission. Each item recycled brings us closer to reducing environmental impact and fostering a culture of responsibility.
