Food responsibility

Promote responsible food practices

We promote sustainable and responsible food on campus by:

  • Expanding vegetarian and plant-based menu options with clear labeling and awareness campaigns on health and environmental benefits.
  • Setting procurement guidelines to reduce carbon-intensive foods and single-use packaging.
  • Launching initiatives like Meat-Free Mondays and Local Food Weeks.
  • Managing event food excess responsibly through redistribution to community organizations when safe, or composting if redistribution isn’t possible.

Zero Hunger Initiative: Turning Surplus into Support

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi affirms its commitment to minimising food waste by ensuring that surplus food is not discarded unnecessarily. In 2025, university launched a Zero Hunger Initiative focused on donating unsold surplus food portions to campus staff, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger.

2025 Progress: Food Recovery in Action

From January to March 2025 alone, SUAD successfully donated:

  • 70 unsold portions in January (8.75 kg)
  • 82 portions in February (10.25 kg)
  • 33 portions in March (4.13 kg)

Each meal portion—typically 125 grams—was fresh, safe, and surplus from daily cafeteria operations.

How the Program Works

  • At the end of each day, unsold yet safe-to-eat food is set aside from dining operations
  • The food is portioned hygienically and stored for short-term redistribution
  • Staff members are informed and invited to collect these meals in a respectful and organised manner
  • All data is monitored monthly to evaluate the impact and optimise operations

Why It Matters?

  • Reduces organic food waste on campus
  • Promotes food equity and dignity for all staff
  • Complements the university’s composting and recycling programmes
  • Builds a culture of responsibility and care

What’s Next?

SUAD is planning to:

  • Extend the initiative to additional teams
  • Collaborate with student clubs for food packaging and awareness campaigns
  • Track cumulative annual weight and meal count of food donated

By transforming surplus into support, SUAD is building a more compassionate and sustainable campus.
