Research Interests

My research focuses on the study of language and style in contemporary French and Francophone literature (XXth and XXIrst centuries), and has five main strands: punctuation, as a grammatical, poetic and stylistic object; correction, on an orthographic and orthotypographic, editorial and figural level; variation, in literary genres (mainly novel and theatre), textual genetics and transtextuality; translation and French as a foreign language / another language; writing about women and consent. What unites all my work is the questioning of the notion of ‘passage’, in the sense of ‘crossing’, as well as its linguistic and generic modalities, whether it be the passage from one literary genre to another, from one language to another, from one creative hand to another (from the editorial function to the writer and vice versa), from one genetic state of the text to another throughout the creative writing process, whether this passage takes place in the mode of respect for rules, conventions and norms, or conversely, of transgression.

I've studied the work of many writers of XXth and XXIrst centuries who are border-crossers and intercultural bridges builders, literally speaking, or because of their nomadic and in-between creative process: Samuel Beckett, Laurent Mauvignier, Julia Deck, Tanguy Viel, and other writers from éditions de Minuit, Jean Rouaud, Marie Darrieussecq, Ryoko Sekiguchi, Raymond Cousse, Le Clézio, Nicolas Bouvier, Maylis de Kerangal, Arno Bertina, and other writers from éditions Verticales, collectif Inculte, Shumona Sinha, Hala Moughanie, Robert Merle, André Gide, Marguerite Duras, Eugène Ionesco, Jean Genet, Blaise Cendrars, Simone de Beauvoir, and so on.

I have organized many scientific events to which I have invited writers for round-table discussions open to a wide audience, including experts. My research activity is thus closely linked to the cultural activities I am organizing and the dissemination of academic knowledge provided through those activities. I am actually willing to provide a living snapshot of what's happening in literature today and to anchor the university as a place of scholarly knowledge in the community, so that knowledge can be disseminated and shared.

Working on a contemporary literary corpus allows me to study how literary forms and speeches have the power to reflect or impact today world, imaginaries and societies. As a reason, I am currently working on three research projects : challenges and perspectives of writing in French as a foreign language / another language in the XXIrst century; how to create and teach with IA ; consent tested by the post #metoo literature.

Through my activities (namely “Dictée de la Sorbonne”, implemented first in SU and then SUAD) and my publications, I have been constantly promoting the French language, both in Aix-en-Provence (Aix-Marseille Université), Paris (Sorbonne Université, Faculty of arts and Humanities) and in Abu Dhabi (Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi), where I've held successive teaching and research posts.

Recent research Collaborations

2024-2026. Full member of the ANR ‘Consent’ project, coordinated by Anne Verjus. Attached to Axis 1 ‘The language of sexual consent’ (scientific leader: Noémie Marignier) This project proposes a novel approach to sexual consent as part of an interdisciplinary study of sensibilities. Rather than mobilising an abstract politico-legal reflection on normative statements, we will develop a theory of normativity ‘from below’ through a historicised analysis of the forms of expression and evaluation that social actors produce in context concerning sexual interactions. This seems to us to be the only approach capable of determining the actual place of consent among the criteria that separate acceptable sexual relationships from those that are not. In this way, we aim to shift the locus of contemporary theoretical and public controversies on sexual consent, and to produce expertise and tools that can be mobilised in the fields of civil and criminal law, education and pedagogy in the context of public teaching.

2019-2021. Reference person for SU, content creation, proofreading and editing, within the framework of the ANR project ‘écri+’ (n°ANR-17-NCUN-0015), of which SU has been the associate partner since I submitted its application, with Thomas Joufflineau, co-director of SIAL and digital Vice-Dean of SU (Lettres). A winner of the national call for projects under the PIA3 (Plan d'investissements d'avenir) ‘New University Curricula’ programme, the digital écri+ programme meets the need to improve the written French of all students (expression and comprehension skills, from vocabulary to text organisation, including spelling and sentence syntax). It is developing assessment, training and certification tools in French for bachelor's and master's students, but also, in the long term, for working people and companies wishing to improve the skills of their managers. Coordinated by the UOH (Université numérique des Humanités), it brings together 18 higher education establishments - including one Quebec university (Concordia University).   • 2022 and 2023, SUAD. Choix Goncourt de l'Orient, a cultural activity for students in French Studies and other departments. In collaboration with the Agence universitaire de la francophonie, some forty higher education institutions in the Near and Middle East, and the SUAD Library (Marie Gibon). 8 to 10 work sessions aimed at familiarising students with the world of literary prizes and introducing them to the workings of a literary prize jury. The SUAD students' reading reports were published on the AUF website dedicated to the literary prize.
  • November 2022 (21), SUAD. As part of Documentary Month, in partnership with the Service de Coopération et d'Action Culturelle of the French Embassy, screening of the documentary film Les Joueuses, followed by a meeting with director Stéphanie Gillard. Co-organised (with Émilie Crocq-Othman).
  • December 2021, Louvre Abu Dhabi. Poetry Night. In partnership with the Institut français and the Louvre Abu Dhabi. 8 SUAD students took part in this event, involving poets, musicians and video-makers (6 FLE students, 1 LEA student, 1 economics student). These students recited trilingual poems (French, Arabic, English) on the theme of travel, which they had written during a poetry workshop (Oct-Nov: 8 sessions), led by Charbel Elias and Karine Germoni.

  • 2013-2014, 5 December-5 February, AMU. Facilitation of a series of writing workshops centred on the novel Viviane Elisabeth Fauville by Julia Deck (Minuit, 2012) at the Lycée Cézanne in Aix-en-Pce with around fifteen Year 10 students and their French teacher in preparation for the workshop ‘Écrire avec Julia Deck’. On the morning of the workshop, the pupils met with the students, who had also prepared for the workshop in advance, during joint workshops. The afternoon was devoted to discussions with the author about the writing work produced between December and February. The event attracted quite a large audience (students, secondary school pupils with their parents, colleagues).

Organisation of the Dictée de la Sorbonne, in partnership with the Direction des Affaires culturelles of the Faculté des Lettres de SU, the SIAL and a team of colleagues from the UFR de Langue française, Littérature française et comparée, LEA, Latin, Histoire, and the Pôle Français of the language department of the Faculté des Sciences et Ingénierie, the publishers Larousse, DeBoeck, and, from 2021, Le Parisien, La Délégation générale à la langue française and Orthodidacte. Drafting of original texts (alternating with Isabelle Ville), the rules (which provide for 3 categories of candidates: FLE/ERASMUS, juniors, seniors), the answer key (co-presented) with the management of the UFR de Langue française, the texts of all the communication media; setting up the team of markers (15-20 colleagues); internal communication with international relations, the inter-age university, the communication department at faculty and university level; external communication: promotion to literary preparatory classes (75), high school students (75, 78 and 92) and the general public (Paris libraries); inviting sponsors/readers (Félix Libris, Jane Sautière, Frédéric Ciriez, Arno Bertina, Julia Deck, Marie Darrieussecq, Dominique Barbéris); organising interludes (readings, language quizzes) during the marking of papers.
