German Language Day

Abstract

Sorbonne University in collaboration with  The Embassies of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the Consulate of Luxembourg, the German schools of the UAE, the Goethe Institut, the OeAD and Discover ME cordially invites you to German language Day.

The event is designed to introduce participants to the German language and culture through engaging and enjoyable activities led by our students, as well as booths hosted by public institutions and companies. 

The event is also aimed at individuals who do not speak German but are eager to explore this beautiful language and culture.

A diverse array of activities will be available, offering attendees the opportunity to engage with the German language, culture, and history.

Event Highlights Include:

  • Official opening by the Austrian Ambassador
  • Stalls hosted by Embassies, schools, and companies
  • A brief presentation
  • Raffle draw
  • Award ceremony for the writing competition

Activities for Participants Include:

  • Photo shoots
  • Painting the Berlin Wall
  • Crafting with cardboard
  • Karaoke in German
  • Making “Kalter Hund” (a traditional German dessert)
  • Learning about famous Germans, Austrians, and Swiss figures
  • Enjoying pretzels the traditional way
  • Exploring various dialects within German-speaking countries
  • Participating in a scavenger hunt
  • Playing “Gerpardy”
  • Testing your knowledge and learning about the German language and German-speaking countries through trivia quizzes and Kahoots!

Participants can enter the raffle draw after completing a certain number of activities and filling their “Stempelkarte” (stamp card). A variety of prizes are up for grabs, including goodie bags, books, and subscriptions.

Additionally, there is a Writing Competition. This year’s theme focuses on life in the UAE before the discovery of oil. Whether in the form of a short story, poem, essay, or report, participants are encouraged to submit their work (no more than 700 words) to Alexa@discover-middleeast.com by January 20th. The winner will have their work published in the UAE’s only German-language magazine, Discover ME.
