For nearly three years, a group of artists, researchers, and technologists have been collaborating to bring to life “L’Astrologue ou les Faux Présages”, an original play imagined in the style of Molière. Blending classical theater with cutting-edge artificial intelligence, the project explores a creative “what if”: what might a new Molière play look and sound like today?
Developed in partnership with the collective Obvious and supported by Sorbonne University as well as Mistral AI and the Théâtre Molière Sorbonne. the initiative brings together expertise across disciplines, from literature and dramaturgy to visual arts and machine learning. While AI was used to generate the play’s text, it also played a key role in shaping its visual and musical identity, contributing to a fully immersive artistic experience.
As part of this work, Xavier, Head of Sorbonne Centre for Artificial Intelligence at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, contributed to the development of a model specifically fine-tuned for musical score generation, trained on period repertoire. Building on these foundations, and guided by both scholarly insights and the practical needs of stage performance—such as rhythm, pacing, and choreography—he helped create original compositions for a small ensemble of four instruments: two violins, one viola, and one cello. The resulting pieces, including an overture, a march, and a sarabande, are performed live during the play, reinforcing its historical atmosphere while showcasing new forms of AI-assisted creation.
By combining artistic heritage with contemporary technologies, “L’Astrologue ou les Faux Présages” offers a unique exploration of how artificial intelligence can support and enrich the creative process—opening new perspectives on both past and future forms of artistic expression.
